Fathers

This Father’s Day I’ve been thinking about the men who helped make me who I am.

My dad, Robert Hargrove. My grandfathers, James G. Hargrove and George T. Richbourg. My uncles. None of them were perfect men, but they were my men. Their lives, their stories, their successes, their failures, their hard work, and their perseverance all left a mark on me.

As I get older, I realize more and more that much of what I know about work, responsibility, family, faith, service, and endurance came from watching the men who went before me. Some lessons came through conversations. Some came through example. Some came through mistakes I witnessed and learned from. All of it mattered.

They lived through different times and different challenges, but they taught me that a man keeps going, keeps working, keeps providing, keeps serving, and keeps trusting God even when life is difficult.

Today I am thankful for the heritage they left behind. Not money or possessions, but something more valuable: character, values, stories, memories, and a family legacy that continues from one generation to the next.

I miss those who are gone. I appreciate those who are still here. And I thank God for every one of them.

The older I get, the more I understand that we are all living on foundations built by others.

Happy Father’s Day to the men who shaped me.
