Bible Study: Did Jesus Say We Must Believe in Him to Be Saved?

Key Question: Did Jesus teach that believing in Him is necessary for salvation, or only that we should love God and our neighbor?

Focus Verse 1 — John 6:29

“Jesus replied, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.’”

Observation

  • The crowd asked what works God required.
  • Jesus redirected them from religious works to faith in Himself.

Truth
Salvation begins by trusting Christ, not by earning God’s favor.

Focus Verse 2 — John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Observation

  • Jesus Himself explains how eternal life is received.
  • The condition is believing in the Son.

Truth
Faith in Jesus is God’s appointed means of receiving eternal life.

Focus Verse 3 — Matthew 22:37–40

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Observation

  • Jesus is answering, “Which is the greatest commandment?”
  • He is summarizing the entire Law, not explaining the means of salvation.

Truth
Love for God and neighbor is the greatest moral command. It describes God’s righteous standard and the life of His people.

Bringing the Three Passages Together

Jesus taught both:

  • How to receive eternal life: Believe in Him (John 3:16; John 6:29).
  • How citizens of God’s kingdom are to live: Love God completely and love your neighbor (Matthew 22:37–40).

These are not competing teachings.

Faith in Christ brings a person into God’s kingdom. Love for God and neighbor is the fruit of a life transformed by God’s grace.

As Paul later wrote:

“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. What matters is faith working through love.” (Galatians 5:6)

  1. Why did Jesus answer different people differently?
  2. What is the difference between the question, “What is the greatest commandment?” and “What must I do to have eternal life?”
  3. How do believing in Christ and loving God and neighbor complement rather than contradict one another?
  4. Does your life demonstrate both trust in Christ and growing love for God and others?
